Democracy 3 and emotional impact of games

I decided to express what I thought about how democracy 3’s real world setting and topics makes me, and hopefully other players think about real world issues in a way that fantasy and sci-fi setting simply cannot do…

  1. yeah.. was thinking of buying democracy 3 lately because it would maybe help me see some things differently in some political/financial stuff etc.. this video pretty much confirms I should buy this game lol

  2. Testosterone based games are also emotional games, because testosterones create emotions, right?

I don’t treat Democracy 3 as an emotional game, I treat it as an enclosed system that needs to be conquered or as a system to see if I can recreate realistic situations and outcome. I am of course happy or sad if it works, but I do not try to let my emotions guide me in decision making. I want to pick the best thing that is there to make a situation that I want to have and see how it reacts.

I guess the emotional part you mean come in when I decide my goals that I want to have, as you said, but during the period of rulership, I try to achieve the goal by the game mechanics.

I can see how someone would get very emotional in the game though, but maybe it is too abstract. I guess people should write letters to the ruler time and again to give it a more emotional touch (similar to the religous condemnation, but more on a personal level).

  3. Indeed, this was something I’ve seen suggested elsewhere, that you get letters from voters upset that they just lost their job due to your policies, or have been robbed etc :D

  4. You could also make it a bit interesting/modern for example events where a certain number of voters (caculated) makes a petition to get a hearing on an issue or there are rallies and these things in favor/against certain things. Inner politics without any negative or positive events, just people reacting and getting busy on your policies that they see as negative. Currently people either just get unhappy or they turn into assassins.

I think political counter-movements to your actions might be a thing, if enough people are affected. It could cause national debates or you would have to invest political capital to defend your position. And if there is a group majorly opposed to your ideas, but they do not get any public support, they could either just turn unhappy or into an underground organisation, if they are militant enough and they have no apathy.

But yea if you want to evoke more emotions or roleplay-ness, getting specific things either from individuals or groupings of people that demand stuff and force you to spend capital to either interact with them and loose out on a change you wanted to implement or ignore them and gain unhappiness and maybe more opposing people, as they do not hear the other side of the argument, then that might be a nice change.

  5. Well the intention (although I guess it may not be too obvious) was for the pressure-groups to represent this. The security page shows all those dodgy terrorist groups, but it also shows the more ‘mild’ protest organizations which act as ‘feed-ins’ to the terrorist groups. In an ideal world, membership of all of those should be pretty low.

  6. I understand if you dislike my idea because of the general low amount of people who are willing to pay a premium price for the market I wil ask about. The market I am talking about is iOS. This question is mainly due to my s&@?!£ laptop and the fact that I do everything on my iPad. I honestly think that putting this game on the App Store would be a good idea and the interface seems almost designed for iOS. If you strongly disagree with my idea please say because I want to know. Thank you for spending your time to read this.
