Positech Games is…building another school in Cameroon

…Well not actually doing the building work obviously. I have trouble putting shelves up these days, but we are funding another school in Cameroon in partnership with the charity Building Schools For Africa.  If you read my blog a lot you might know that we already built a school in Cameroon a while back. Here is the last blog post about it. Its pretty transformational when you look at what the school looked like before (basically a shack) and how awesome it looks afterwards.

Our reason for doing this remains the same. Education is a good thing, and there are still too many people in the world who don’t have access to it. Education helps lift people out of poverty, and is a pre-condition for a modern democracy. I was lucky enough to be born in England, not into any money whatsoever (far from it), but nevertheless in a country where I would always be housed, and have food, clean water, education and safety. I understand why people give to local charities, or charities that are working on problems they have personally experienced or are deeply connected to, but personally I find it unusually easy to detach myself from considerations such as ‘people like me’ and ‘my country’ and think more about ‘who needs help’ and ‘whats the most impact my donation can make’. I don’t know of any charity in the south west of the UK that could affect as many peoples lives with such dramatic effect as building an entire school in Cameroon would, for the same money. It also doesn’t bother me that I probably will never see the school, or meet anyone who goes to it. I’m unusual like that, so I’m in a good position to do this.

The school in question is called (rather unfortunately for an atheist like me…) ‘St Therese of the child Jesus catholic primary school’ and looks like this:

The last school we built ended up looking like this:

Bit of an improvement methinks. Obviously they just demolish the old one and start again. Project details:

“The project is just the three classrooms, an office, a latrine with hand washing facilities, 27 benches to seat 54-81 children (depending on their age and size!) and 3 tables and chairs for the teachers, tools and seeds for the school garden, project management and monitoring costs. ”

Lets not gloss over the latrine and hand-washing facilities too quickly. Hopefully this will mean better educated AND healthier kids. The total cost to positech  is £23,967 (approximately $33,000). The school is in Muyuka in Cameroon, population 34,000.

Like last time, I offer the disclaimer that although these blog posts can read a bit ‘ooh aren’t we wonderful’, I do them mainly to provide information and encourage others to get involved too, and I know thats happened at least once. Positech Games is a bizarrely successful games company, and I feel very lucky to be in a position where we can do stuff like this. Big thanks to everyone who has continued to buy our games and make this sort of thing possible. You rock.

War Child armistice 2017: Raising money for Children affected by war

Long time blog readers will remember that we did this last year too. Basically Democracy 3 was in the armistice sale on steam, so over that period in November, 100% of the money positech earned from steam during the armistice is donated to war child. I just got Novembers sale reports and it looks like we raised $10,167.51 for the charity. if you bought the game or any of its DLC from 6-13th November, all your money (well, our cut of it anyway) went to helping refugees and victims of war.

Here is a video from war child aimed at gamers that shows why they are needed:

Last year we earned $15,166, so its lower this year, but then Democracy 3 is an older game now, and there are a lot more games on steam. Next year I challenge games like PUBG to join us. If a solo indie dev can do this, so can the big names. 7 days income is not going to put them out of business, but it can make an enormous difference to people who really need it.

Donating 100% of Democracy 3 steam profits to charity this week

We are again supporting war child, who are running an ‘armistice bundle’, where Democracy 3 and its DLC is 20% off, and 100% of the developer share goes to the charity War Child, which takes care of children affected by war. Here is the link to the D3 store page:

Also a link to the war child bundle: http://store.steampowered.com/bundle/5238/Warchild__Armistice_Bundle/

And finally to the charity page itself:

If you are able to share links to those, that would be awesome. I love the idea of doing an unambiguously ‘good thing’ and at the same time showing people that gamers are generous, and the games industry does care about violence, and suffering, and stuff other than memes and which console is best. I think stuff like this is really good for showing the positive side of gaming.

We supported the same charity last year and we raised $15,166.92 for the charity. it would be super awesome if we could beat that this time. if you want to know what moved me to support this charity, watch this video:

Democracy 3 raised $15,166.92 for War Child

A while ago we announced that from 21st November to 2nd December, all the Democracy 3 revenue from steam (including DLC etc) would be donated to war child. We finally did the maths and the total we are donating is $15,166.92. Yay! Biog thanks to everyone who continues to buy this game, and to Wayne Emanuel from War Child who talked me into doing it (I didn’t need much convincing tbh). For those people wondering what on earth War Child is, its a charity whose mission is…

To protect, educate and stand up for the rights of children caught up in war.

I often feel guilt at having such a cushy life, sat in a nice office in the countryside in a country that hasn’t been invaded since people invented guns, having never faced real poverty or the threat of violence. I can’t imagine how it screws people up to witness war as children, let alone to lose friends and relatives to war. I know we all like our war games, I still play Battlefield One most days, but lets not forget that war isn’t just movies and cool games, but something that continues to blight peoples lives, especially in Syria right now.

Anyway…enough preachy stuff. We raised $15k, which hopefully helps quite a bit.

In other news, all our games are discounted by various amounts in the steam sale. Maybe a cute game about animals and politics will tempt you this festive season?

Happy Christmas.

Donating Democracy 3 revenue to War Child

Watch this video:

Starting Today, and running for twelve days, Positech is donating all its steam revenue from the Democracy 3 franchise to a charity called war child. Thats the full price of each game, minus steams cut.  Hopefully we will raise about $20k. As gamers, we spend a lot of time (me included) shooting guns in virtual wars. Lets spare some time to consider the impact of real; life wars that are happening right now on children around the world.
