Desktop Wallpaper for GSB

I think GSB will turn out to be a game that has some decent screenshots. This is the first one I’ve taken for use as a desktop wallpaper. I’ll get some better (more frantic) ones done at some point, but here is the first one:

Here are the links:

1920×1200 res

1680×1050 res

1280×1024 res

It’s more of an indicator of how much stuff fits onscreen at higher resolutions rather than any attempt at showing off the engine right now. I’ve toggled the UI off for this screenshot. Any thoughts?

  1. looks nice, but for wallpaper I’ll wait for something with a black background. :-)

  2. Those are just the top 3 formats on the steam hardware survey. All screen resolutions with a height over 768 will definitely work.

  3. I love the cruiser that split up in to 3 pieces (the round ones are definitely my favorite). Will each type of ship break into pieces, or will some of them just explode?

  4. right now only the cruisers split into those pieces. The frigates also blast apart but it’s more temporary. However, I may introduce more lasting rubble for frigates at some point.

  5. Looks very interesting and seems to do something that hasn’t been attempted recently.

A thought crossed my mind as I was looking through your website.

    Tactics.

If, at any point in battle, you deploy a tactic that affects the battle, it would greatly increase the fun.

  6. Heh, I like that. You could use tactics like a fleet commander would. Ie: saying something general, “If possible, attack those large ships”, understanding that the frigate with a dozen enemy fighters swarming it would prefer to shoot at the fighters.

But only in a limited way, something like one-use items, with a limited amount, say 3, per battle.

Flipping through the return of the jedi script:

    ACKBAR:
Once the shield is down, our cruisers will create a perimeter, while the
fighters fly into the superstructure and attempt to knock out the main reactor.

ie: “Create perimeter”, “Focus fighters on main reactor”,

    ACKBAR:
Take evasive action! Green Group, stick close
    to holding sector MV-7.

    LANDO:
Accelerate to attack speed! Draw their fire
    away from the cruisers.

    LANDO (desperately):
Yes! I said closer! Move as close as you can
and engage those Star Destroyers at point-
    blank range.

    ACKBAR:
Concentrate all fire on that Super Star Destroyer.”

Of course, this might alter the gameplay away from a pure watch-the-battle-like-a-movie experience. If you’ve gone with no control up to now, then it would shift things away from your design and maybe break it.

But if you can use basic orders or stances, or any method of control in the battle, even something like choosing when to retreat, or when to send in reserves, then named one-use tactics like which would not allow you to play as an RTT, but would make the player watch the battle tensely, waiting for a key moment, where the command to focus fire, or engage at point blank range would swing the battle.

  7. The only reason to avoid doing this is that it would not be an option in the ‘challenge’ matches against other people, because they are not there to make mid-battle corrections. Of course, the game could just have two modes, challenge mode and direct-control mode…
